Polo
Polo is an equestrian sport that actually came from India in the 1800s, but is considered an English sport for its popularity and the fact that England has transformed this into a sport that the English is well known for.
Polo is played between two teams that have four men on each team. Each team member has a stick in their hand and they are trying to knock the ball into the other team’s goal while riding a horse. The fields are 300 yards long and 160 yards wide, giving plenty of playing room, especially since the players are riding upon horses during game play.
Each time a team scores, they change sides. There are also two umpires on the field, also riding horses. There are 4 to 6 periods per game and each period is 7 minutes long. This is a rather easy game to play and it is a lot of fun.
There are now many polo clubs throughout England with many of them catering to beginner players. There is no age limit and the sport is played during the winter. It is great to play and observe.
